A short history of Yoga: few references about yoga are found during the Vedic Period (2000-1000 BCE) there are particular discriptions about breath contol, basic philosophy and spirituality. The basis of modern yoga happens during the Classical Period (200 CE) when the Yoga Sutra (including the eight limbs) is written by Patanjali. Post-Classical Yoga (500 CE-1900 CE) the many styles of yoga are created based on the some of the Yoga Sutras and the eight limbs. Hatha yoga has many schools forming and the basic poses become established. Modern Yoga (1900 CE – Present) different yoga masters travel to the West and begin teaching their yoga philosophies.
The general definition of Yoga is to yoke together. Oxen wore a yoke to keep them working as a team in the fields or pulling a cart. Today, it means something entirely different.
The western world is no longer aware of the concept of being in “touch” with our bodies, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Yoga is a spiritual philosophy and physical exercise which can bring us back to experiencing life in the moment, no matter how uncomfortable it may be for us. The working together, yoking, of breath and movement, helps the body to release, relax, bring in more oxygen and create space within the internal areas of the body. Hatha Yoga uses poses or asanas linked to the breath or Ujjayi Pranayama to create a “flow” of movement which brings the mind, body and spirit together creating an internal awareness of how the individual exists in time and space. This movement and breath also causes the individual to recognize and experience strong emotions that may have been repressed and/or the physical sensations of tightness and soreness, with this awareness comes release, resoultion and healing.
There are also studies which show the health benefits of Yoga. For example, regular yoga practice has been shown to increase brain GABA, a natural neurotransmitter which reduces excessive brain activity and promotes a state of calm, improving mood and decreasing anxiety.
